Alexandria Library

(The Gilmour Institute)

A formal pink-sandstone building located on Gilmour Street in Alexandria (West Dunbartonshire), the Alexandria Library was the gift of William Ewing Gilmour (1854 - 1924), a local industrialist, and opened in 1884 as the Gilmour Institute. The building was extended in the 1920s to house a committee room and offices for the new Vale of Leven District Council. With the offices moving elsewhere, this space was incorporated into the library as part of a refurbishment in 1988. The library is now the responsibility of West Dunbartonshire Council, and includes local history material relating to the Vale of Leven.
