Located by the harbour in Lochinver in the NW Highlands, the Assynt Leisure Centre comprises a sports, youth and learning centre which comprises a sports hall, fitness room, changing rooms and a multi-purpose room on the lower floor, with a youth cafe, computer room and a learning centre on the upper floor. The sports hall has three full-sized badminton courts and can be used for a variety of different sports.
Growing from an initiative which began in 1996, a group of volunteers established a charity to raise funds for the facility, in conjunction with Assynt Christian Community Youth Project and Assynt Community Education. Construction of the £1.1 million facility began in 2004 and it was officially opened by HRH the Princess Royal on 29th July 2005, who unveiled a commemorative plaque that had been made locally by Highland Stoneware Pottery.
