A theatre and conference venue located within the parkland setting of the Crichton Campus, 1½ miles (2.5 km) southeast of Dumfries town centre, Easterbrook Hall is a long single-storey building, which rises to two storeys in its central eight bays. The style is restrained art deco, built in red sandstone by local architect James Flett. The building provided pioneering recreational facilities to the psychiatric patients of the Crichton Royal Hospital, including a canteen, entertainment hall, swimming pool, gymnasium and squash courts. It was named after Dr C.C. Easterbrook who had been Physician Superintendent (1908-37) and was the driving force behind a massive expansion of the hospital.
By 1995, the hall was part of the hospital estate which was no longer required as the need for residential psychiatric beds reduced. It was refurbished as a conference hall and now includes a 600-seater main auditorium, with a stage, together with further conference rooms and exhibition areas. The building is B-listed.
