A once-grand classical mansion in East Renfrewshire, Caldwell House is located a mile (1.4 km) north of Lugton and 1¼ miles (2 km) west southwest of Uplawmoor. This A-listed mansion of three storeys and a basement was built 1771-73 by Robert and James Adam (1728-92; 1732-94) for William Mure a wealthy politician, whose family had owned the lands here since ancient times. The entrance front faces northeast and comprises five bays with a projecting porch, while the garden front is of seven bays. A crenellated parapet runs around the roofline, very slightly corbelled out from the walls and divided by little bartizans each with pointed caps. There was once fine paintwork by Thomas Bonnar (1810-73) in the hall.
The house was converted into a hospital in 1927, losing many of its original features, but was destroyed by fire in 1995, leaving little more than a shell.
