George Meikle Kemp Memorial

Located next to the A703 road at Redscarhead, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) north of Peebles, the George Meikle Kemp Memorial commemorates the builder of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh, who died tragically at the age of 48. Between 1809 and 1813, Kemp was apprenticed here to Andrew Noble, a master-wright and carpenter. Erected in 1932, the memorial comprises a tripartite Gothic blind window set into the gable of an existing building. In the centre is a bronze plaque with a relief of Kemp and the Scott Monument, to the left it a panel inscribed:

"This Memorial to George Meikle Kemp was subscribed by the Inhabitants of the County of Peebles and Others on the First Centenary of the Death of Sir Walter Scott, Baronet of Abbotsford, 21st September 1932."

To the right, a further panel records:

"Sir Michael G. Thorburn, Lord Lieutenant, George Anderson, Provost of Peebles, Robert Mathieson, Provost of Innerleithen, James Grieve FSA Scot, Committee"

Below are carved the arms of Peebles, Scotland and Innerleithen.
