East Kilbride Railway Station

(Cille Bhrìghde an Ear)

Located on Torrance Road in the West Mains district of East Kilbride, East Kilbride Railway Station (Gael: Cille Bhrìghde an Ear) is a busy suburban halt situated a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of the town centre. Opened on the Busby Railway in 1868, a line which was taken over by the Caledonian Railway in 1882 and is now part of the Glasgow South Western Line. East Kilbride Station once served a small village but as the New Town developed from the 1950s, its importance grew. The station is modern, with no architectural merit. It is staffed, but has only one platform, and is now the terminus of a single-track branch line which connects to Glasgow Central station. It is preceded by Hairmyres Station, 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the west. The line once continued to Hunthill Junction (High Blantyre) and Hamilton, but this section closed shortly after the Second World War. Operated by ScotRail, East Kilbride Railway Station is staffed part-time and was used by 855,950 passengers per annum in 2009-10.
