One of the oldest of the Clyde piers, the Tighnabruaich Pier extends into the Kyles of Bute at the northern end of the village. Built in the mid-1830s for the Castle Steam packet Company, on the steamer route to Inveraray, it was sold to the Tighnabruaich Estate in the 1840s. In 1851, the route passed to David Hutcheson and Co., who had David MacBrayne (1818 - 1907) as junior partner, and this company soon after acquired a mail contract. The pier was rebuilt in 1884-85. It was sold by the Tighnabruaich Estate in 1950, to its then piermaster, and then again in 1965 to Argyll County Council. The Waverley paddle steamer has called here as part of a regular service since 1975.
