St Fittick's Church

A B-listed ruined church on St. Fittick's Road, to the east of Torry, 1½ miles (2.5 km) east southeast of the centre of Aberdeen. St. Fittick's Church lies within parkland, overlooking Nigg Bay. The church may have been an ancient foundation, first established by St. Fittick himself in the mid-7th century. A new chapel was built in the late 12th C., under Arbroath Abbey which had been founded by William I (1143 - 1214). This chapel was dedicated by Bishop David de Bernham c.1240. The current structure dates mostly from 1704 (the date of the bellcote) and was once harled. It is surrounded by a substantial kirkyard, with fine 17th and 18th C. grave slabs, and is a scheduled ancient monument. In 1829, St. Fittick's was replaced by Nigg Kirk, located 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the southwest, while a new church dedicated to St. Fittick opened in Torry in 1899, which is home to the bell from the old church, cast by John Mowat in Old Aberdeen in 1759.
