Rosebery Reservoir

A deep reservoir lying in a sheltered valley on the River South Esk 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Gorebridge in Midlothian, to the south of Edinburgh, Rosebery Reservoir forms one of a network of reservoirs supplying that city with water. It was the work of engineer James Leslie (1801-89), perhaps better known for his harbours. Retained by an earth embankment dam, it opened in 1885 and covers an area of 36.1 ha (89 acres). The reservoir is operated by Scottish Water.
