Ayton Castle

Located to the northwest of Ayton in the Scottish Borders, Ayton Castle lies 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Eyemouth and 7 miles (11 km) north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Built by James Gillespie Graham in 1841 and extended in 1860 by David Bryce, it replaced a castle that was often held by the English in their raids into Scotland. This old peel-tower had been a stronghold of the Aytoun, Home and Fordyce families, but burned to the ground in 1834.
