A range of hills in south Stirling Council Area and East Dunbartonshire, the Campsie Fells lie between the Endrick Water and the valley of Strathblane which separates the Campsies from the Kilpatrick Hills to the west. The highest point in the range is Earls Seat which rises to 578m (1897 feet). Erosion along the line of a geological faultline known as the Campsie Fault has left tiers of rock representing some 30 lava flows which date from the Carboniferous period. The headwaters of the Rivers Carron, Endrick and Kelvin rise in the Campsie Fells.
It has been suggested the English scientist Michael Faraday (1791 - 1867) came up with the theory of electromagnetic induction while lost on these hills in 1841. A walking route and cairn commemorate author and broadcaster Tom Weir (1914 - 2006). The Campsie Fells was one of the filming locations for the Monty Python film The Meaning of Life in 1982.
