Saddell House

Located on Saddell Bay, an inlet of the Kilbrannan Sound, overlooking the Isle of Arran, Saddell House was built in 1774 by Colonel Donald Campbell and comprises a two-storey mansion with a projecting central pediment and unusual offset entrance stair rising to a Roman Doric porch. This house replaced the 16th century Saddell Castle, which lies to the southwest and was a seat of the Bishop of Argyll and then the MacDonalds before becoming the property of the Campbells.

The house was destroyed by fire in 1899, but quickly rebuilt. Thus although the exterior gives the impression of a grand Georgian mansion, the interior is restrained Edwardian. The house and estate were acquired by the Landmark Trust in 1975 and the house, castle and associated cottages are available to let as holiday accommodation.
