Hairmyres Railway Station

(Fèith na Maighiche)

A modern unmanned halt on the East Kilbride branch of the Glasgow South Western railway, Hairmyres Station (Gael: Fèith na Maighiche) now lies on the western edge of the New Town of East Kilbride. It lies 1½ miles (2.5 km) west of East Kilbride (the terminus) and a similar distance east southeast of Thorntonhall. It opened in 1868 as a rural station on the former Busby Railway, later serving the hospital which grew up nearby. Now operated by ScotRail, it is used by more than 460,000 passengers per annum. This section of line is single-track; the preceding station is Thorntonhall, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the west northwest, while the following station is East Kilbride, the terminus, 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the east.
