Orchardton Tower

Situated outside Palnackie in Dumfries and Galloway, Orchardton Tower is the only example of a round tower-house in Scotland. It is believed to have been built in the 1450s for John Cairns, although it passed into Maxwell family hands in 1633. Its most famous resident was Sir Robert Maxwell who featured in Sir Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering. Ownership has now passed to Historic Environment Scotland.
