Newark Castle

Located at Port Glasgow in Inverclyde, Newark Castle comprises two parts, the 15th Century tower house built by George Maxwell and a 16th century mansion addition built by his descendant Patrick Maxwell. A Maxwell family home since the early 15th century, the castle was named after the nearby settlement of Newark, which eventually through time became known as Port Glasgow. The castle fell into disrepair in the mid 18th century and has now passed into the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
