An unusual pierced sandstone obelisk on a hilltop at Ravensneuk on the Penicuik Estate in Midlothian, Ramsay's Monument was built in 1759 by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik (1709-82) to complete a southeasterly vista from his home, Penicuik House. It is dedicated to Clerk's friend the poet Allan Ramsay (1686 - 1758).
