Duntreath Castle

A castle and estate in Strathblane, Stirling Council Area, 1¼ miles (2 km) northwest of Blanefield. A 15th-century three-storey keep with a courtyard, Duntreath Castle was a stronghold of the Edmonstones whose lands lay within the powerful earldom of Lennox. Abandoned in the 18th century, the family returned in the 1857 to restore and greatly extend the building. A grand sprawling Baronial pile resulted, but by the mid-20th century this had become impossible for the family to maintain. Thus a decision was taken to reduce the size of the house and all but the original tower-house, a single Victorian range and the gatehouse were demolished.

The estate extends to 2429 ha (6000 acres).
