Ravensneuk Castle

Only an L-shaped section of wall of this small tower-house remains on a hillside a half-mile (0.8 km) northwest of Ravensneuk Farm and 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of Penicuik in Midlothian. Ravensneuk Castle dates from c.1527 and was the property of Oliver Sinclair of Pitcairn. In the 18th C. it was quarried by the Clerks of Penicuik, on whose estate it still stands, to provide stone for building walls. A scheduled ancient monument, the remaining basement wall now barely reaches 1.5m (5 feet). Nearby there is now a picnic table allowing visitors to admire the views.
