Clachan Power Station is a hydro-generation station built partially undergound at the foot of Glen Fyne, with its tail race emptying into the River Fyne, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Cairndow. It was commissioned in 1955 as part of the Sloy-Awe Hydro-Electric Power Scheme and, at 40 megawatts, represents the second largest station on that scheme. It is fed from Loch Shira by an 5¼-mile (8.5-km) tunnel which is 3.4m (11 feet) in diameter, which also collects additional water from intakes in the vicinity of Allt an t-Sithein and the Brannie Burn, together with the slopes above Loch Fyne to the southwest. The single 40 MW turbine is located in an underground turbine hall and represents the most powerful single turbine in the UK.
The scheme is operated by the Perth-based utility company SSE plc.
