One of a number of 'standardised' leisure centres built across Shetland funded by oil revenues, Yell Leisure Centre is located in Mid Yell, next to Mid Yell Junior High School. It includes a 12.5 by 5m pool with small lagoon, games hall, squash court, fitness suite, community room, viewing area with snooker and pool tables, with a grass football pitch outside. Opened in 1988, the architects were Newcastle-based Faulkner Browns.
Yell Leisure Centre is run by the Shetland Recreational Trust and was built with funds from the Shetland Charitable Trust that was responsible for distributing the Disturbance Receipts, which were intended to compensate the people of Shetland for siting the oil terminal at Sullom Voe.
