A day-care, geriatric hospital and care home in Lerwick (Shetland), Montfield Hospital opened as the Zetland County Sanitorium in 1928 for the isolation and treatment of those with tuberculosis. Located on Burgh Road, it became a satellite to the nearby Gilbert Bain Hospital and was soon operating primarily as a geriatric hospital, with c.30 elderly resident patients in three wards. In 2005, this developed into an 18-bed interim placement unit, which accommodated elderly patients who had been discharged from hospital but were either waiting for a place in a care home or for arrangements to be put in place to be looked after at home. The ground floor was converted into a 17-bed care home by Shetland Islands Council in 2010. No longer required as a day-hospital, and with the interim placement unit having outlived its usefulness, NHS Shetland proposed closing the remaining sections of the hospital in 2011.
Montfield Hospital is one of the larger public-sector users connected to the Lerwick District Heating Scheme.
