Donald Dewar Statue

Prominently located in front of the Royal Concert Hall in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, the Donald Dewar Statue commemorates the first of Scotland's First Ministers who had done much to bring about the Scottish Parliament in 1999 but who died suddenly only a year later. The sculpture was the work of Kenny Mackay (b.1966) and cast by Edinburgh-based foundry, Powderhall Bronze. It was unveiled on 7th May 2002, by Prime Minister Tony Blair (b.1953). Originally on a stepped base, which was easily accessible to the public, it was placed on a 2-m (6½-foot) circular red granite pedestal in 2005 having had to be taken away for repairs when vandals damaged Dewar's prominent but vulnerable spectacles.
