Robert Fergusson Statue

An unpretentious monument adopting a walking pose in front of the Canongate Church on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, the Robert Fergusson Statue commemorates the poet who lived at the time of the Scottish Enlightenment but died at the age of only 24. Unveiled by Lord Provost Lesley Hinds on 17th October 2004, the statue was the result of a public competition. Costing in the region of £30,000, it is cast in bronze and was installed at street-level without a plinth. As such, it is popular with tourists who regularly have their photograph taken standing next to it. The sculptor was David Annand and it was cast by the Edinburgh-based foundry, Powderhall Bronze.

A nearby plaque records that the statue was "presented to our friends, the people of Scotland, by the Burns Society of the City of New York and St Andrew Society of the State of New York".
