Barwhillanty

A B-listed villa situated within a picturesque designed landscape of ponds and specimen trees, Barwhillanty lies at the centre of a 2023 ha (5000 acre) estate, located to the east of Parton in Dumfries and Galloway. Built in 1886 for the English brewer Daniel Thwaites (1817-88), who died in the house shortly after its completion, it is still owned by his family. The building was designed by Thwaites' architect from his Eanan Brewery in Blackburn (Lancashire), and comprises two storeys and an attic, with a three-storey central square tower, capped by a steep slate pyramidal roof, above an arts and crafts porch. Much of the service court at the rear was demolished in the 20th century. The interior includes fine carved chimney-pieces in the drawing room and dining room.
