For a long time the seat of power on the Isle of Bute, it was from the Bute Estate Office that the Marquess of Bute's Factor would rule the island. Located on the High Street in Rothesay, the building dates from 1681 and began as the Marquess's town-house. It comprises a white-harled two-storey structure, with a stair tower which projects into the street and rises a storey further. Inside is an ornate chimney-piece and some 18th C panelling remains. The building lies empty awaiting a new use (2012).
