Mount Stuart Visitor Centre

Providing visitor reception and ticketing facilities for the Marquess of Bute's extraordinary island home, Mount Stuart house and gardens, together with an audio-visual introduction, the Mount Stuart Visitor Centre is a strikingly modern building located towards the northwest of the Mount Stuart policies, a half-mile (0.8 km) south southwest of Kerrycroy and 2¾ miles (4.5 km) south southeast of Rothesay. Designed by Alfred Munkenbeck of London-based architects Munkenbeck & Marshall, the building was opened by film director and Bute resident Richard Attenborough in 2001. The Centre is clad in weathered hardwood louvres, with frameless glass walls above, and a balcony overlooking the Mount Stuart estate out to the Firth of Clyde. Sitting sympathetically in a natural parkland landscape, the building was awarded the Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Award for 2001, the 2002 Royal Institute of British Architects Award and was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize. The Centre also includes a restaurant and gift-shop.
