Scottish Hydro Centre

On Waterloo Street in Glasgow's Merchant City, the Scottish Hydro Centre is an interactive education centre promoting the benefits of renewable energy. Operated by electricity supplier Scottish & Southern Energy Plc (SSE), it comprises an exhibition illustrating how renewable energy is produced, primarily from the sun, wind and water, and demonstrate some of the technologies available to reducing energy consumption. The centre was opened in 2012 by motoring journalist Quentin Willson in the presence of the SSE Chief Executive Ian Marchant and Glasgow City Council Leader Gordon Mathieson. An interactive exhibit demonstrates how hydro-power is generated, as visitors release water from a dam. Other displays show how wave-power can be converted into electricity, how the national electricity distribution network operates, and how small-scale renewables can benefit individual homes. Resources for schools are also provided. The centre includes an Electric Garage with free parking and charging points for electrically-powered cars and the opportunity to test-drive the latest vehicles.
