Jean Cameron Cairn

Located amongst housing at the end of Glen Dessary, a street in the St. Leonards district of East Kilbride, the Jean Cameron Cairn lies a half-mile (1 km) east of the town centre. The cairn marks the grave of Mrs Jean Cameron (d.1772), an enthusiastic Jacobite who raised the Camerons of Morvern for Stuart cause in the Rebellion of 1745. The stones used to build the cairn were brought from Acharn in Morvern and it was erected by the East Kilbride Development Corporation in 1995, replacing an earlier marker dated 1958.

The inscription states:

"Site of the grave of Mrs Jean Cameron who died in 1772. Her zealous attachment to the house of Stuart and the part she took to support the interest in the year 1745 made her well-known throughout the country. The house occupied by Jean Cameron, which stood nearby, was demolished in 1958 when this horse chestnut tree was planted."
