Loch Carnan Community Wind Farm

(Iochdar Hill Wind Farm)

Loch Carnan Community Wind Farm is a three-turbine development situated to the south of Loch Carnan, 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of Iochdar in the N of South Uist. Also known as Iochdar Hill Wind Farm, it is owned and operated by Stòras Uibhist, the community-owned South Uist Estate, representing the largest community renewables project at the time of its commissioning in 2013. Comprising three 2.3 MW Enercon E70 turbines, located along 2 miles (3 km) of access tracks based at Iochdar Hill common grazings, the site was chosen because it is remote from residential properties yet has access to the electricity grid, which runs to the existing Loch Carnan Power Station.

The development cost £11.4 million, funded by European Union and Scottish Government finance, along with a commercial loan, and profits are reinvested to benefit of the local community. The main contractor was Glasgow-based R.J. McLeod.
