Black's Memorial Lighthouse

(Duart Point Lighthouse, William Black Memorial Lighthouse)

An unusual lighthouse on the east coast of the island of Mull in Argyll and Bute, Black's Memorial Lighthouse lies a half-mile (1 km) south southeast of Duart Point. It was built 1899-1901 in memory of the novelist William Black (1841-98). Designed by architect William Leiper (1839 - 1916) in the form of a castellated Mediaeval-esque tower, with advice from David A. Stevenson (1854 - 1938), it was constructed in granite by MacDougall & MacColl of Oban at a cost of £1563. Despite two other lights lying opposite, on Lady's Rock and at the southwestern extremity of Lismore, this lighthouse was felt to be necessary due to the number of ships being wrecked nearby. The light was originally illuminated by gas, stored in a tank which was supplied by a steamer run by the Northern Lighthouse Board. Now classified as a minor light, it is now solar-powered and automatic, with a range of 3 nautical miles (5.5 km).
