Nether Liberton Doocot

(Inch Doocot)

Nether Liberton (or Inch) Doocot is the largest doocot in the Lothians, situated alongside Gilmerton Road, only 2 miles (3 km) south southeast of the city centre. This lectern-style structure, with a red pantile rood, contains 2072 nest boxes and measures 11.2m (36 feet, 9 inches) by 6m (19 foot, 6 inches). Most likely dating from the early 17th C., this doocot was built to supply meat to the nearby Inch House. It is now owned by the University of Edinburgh, lying within the compound which is the base for the Landscaping Section of their Estates and Buildings Department. The University has restored the structure and planted a parterre in front.
