A modest wind farm in Highland Perth & Kinross, Calliachar is situated on open heather moorland high on the northwestern slopes of Meall Odhar, to the south of the Moness Forest, 3¾ miles (6 km) south of Aberfeldy. The farm comprises fourteen German-built Siemens turbines, each producing 2.3 MW of electricity, giving a total generation capacity of 32.2 MW for the site. The turbine blades are 101m (331 feet) in diameter and the turbines generate electricity between wind speeds of approximately 4m/sec to 25m/sec. The project was developed by Perth-based I. & H. Brown, who gained planning consent in July 2010 for a rather smaller wind farm than they had originally proposed, but was sold for £5.1 million to the utility group Scottish and Southern Energy Plc (SSE) before construction began in 2012. The farm was commissioned in September 2013 and includes 4¾ miles (7.7 km) of tracks to provide access from the A826 road in Glen Cochill to the east, of which ¾ mile (1.2 km) represents upgraded pre-existing forest track.
The development was controversial, opposed by both Perth & Kinross Council and the Amulree & Strathbraan Windfarm Action Group. SSE operate a joint community fund benefiting from both Calliachar and the nearby Griffin Wind Farm, which is expected to donate £9.8 million to local projects over their operational life.
