Alnwickhill House

Located on the corner of Stanedykehead and Alnwickhill Road, in Alnwickhill in S Edinburgh, Alnwickhill House is located 3 miles (5 km) south southeast of the city centre. Built as the Edinburgh Industrial Home for Fallen Women in 1890 by local architect Robert Wilson (1834 - 1901), it is now B-listed. This is a neat sandstone construction with wallhead gables and fine detailing. Wings extending behind the house enclose a courtyard that includes a carriage-house. Alnwickhill House was built on the site of a private lunatic asylum, built by Warrock Smith in the late 1700s, which some suggest was the Scotland's first place of confinement for the mentally ill.

The property was divided for use as public housing after the First World War, but more recently been refurbished and sold as private flats.
