Balbirnie Park Golf Course is situated a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Markinch and 1½ miles (2.4 km) northeast of Glenrothes in Fife. It opened in 1983 and is set within 56.6 ha (140 acres) of fine parkland and woodland within Balbirnie Park, the former policies of Balbirnie House. It extends to 6200 yards, with a par of 71. The course traces its origins to Markinch Golf Club, which was founded in 1905 under the captaincy of Colonel Edward Balfour of Balbirnie. Having lost its original course, located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the east, during the Second World War, the club folded in 1947. It was re-established as a nine-hole course in 1983 on the present site following an agreement with the Glenrothes Development Corporation for a 99-year lease. A further nine holes opened the following year. The clubhouse was extended in 1995 and the club's first professional was appointed in 1996.
The club plays for trophies originally given to the Markinch Club including the Balbirnie Scratch Trophy that incorporates a feathered ball made by Thomas Alexander of Musselburgh c.1835 and the Handicap Trophy comprising a fine silver tray, both presented by Colonel Balfour. The Ballingall Cup was presented as the ladies trophy by Neill Ballingall, the Factor of the Balbirnie Estate at the time.
