M898 Motorway

Scotland's shortest motorway, and also the highest numbered in the UK, the M898 connects the M8 motorway to the A898 southern approach to the Erskine Bridge. It is only ¾ mile (1.2 km) in length and opened in 1970, a few months before the bridge. It was designed by Freeman Fox & Partners and built by Glasgow-based Whatlings Ltd at a cost of £2.1 million.

At its northern end, the Spectacles Interchange (built in the shape of a rather elongated pair of spectacles) connects the M898 with the A726 into Erskine and the B815 to Bishopton. Here there was once a toll plaza for the Erskine Bridge, but this was removed in 2006 when tolls were abandoned.
