Drumlanrig Tunnel

A railway tunnel in Nithsdale, on the course of the Glasgow South Western Line, Drumlanrig Tunnel is situated a mile (1.8 km) southeast of Enterkinfoot and 2¾ miles (4.5 km) north of Carronbridge. Completed in 1850, it was required to allow the line to turn sharply to the southeast, a diversion insisted upon by Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch (1806-84), to keep it away from Drumlanrig Castle. John Miller (1805-83) was the Chief Engineer, but the work was undertaken by Thomas Campbell, an expert tunnelling contractor. It extends to 1280m (1400 yards) and its route is marked on the ground by a pair of air shafts. A steel bracing system was installed in 2014 to temporarily reinforce the brick lining which had decayed due to water ingress. A permanent solution is required in the future.
