Elgin Railway Station

A railway station in N Moray, Elgin (known in Gaelic as Eilginn) is situated on the Aberdeen-Inverness Line, a half-mile (0.8 km) south southeast of the town centre, to the north of New Elgin. This opened as Elgin West Station on the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway in 1858, which went on to become part of the Highland Railway in 1865. There was once another station which served the Great North of Scotland Railway, Elgin East, which opened in 1852, was rebuilt in 1902 but this closed in 1968. The B-listed building remains barely a quarter-mile (0.4 km) to the east northeast. Now operated by ScotRail, Elgin Railway Station is staffed part-time and comprises a single track line and a passing loop, each served by a separate platform which are linked by a modern pedestrian overbridge. Some goods sidings remains to the east northeast. Passenger numbers have increased from 272,928 per annum in 2010 to 317,456 in 2017. It is preceded by Keith Railway Station, 15 miles (24 km) to the east southeast, and followed by Forres, 12 miles (19 km) to the west.
