Gourock Railway Station

(Gurraig)

A busy railway terminus which represents the end of the Inverclyde Line, Gourock Railway Station (referred to as Gurraig in Gaelic) is located on Kempock Point, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of the town centre and next to the ferry terminal from which services operate to Dunoon, Helensburgh and Kilcreggan. The station was built by the Caledonian Railway in 1889 to capture a greater share of the Clyde steamer trade and the company established the Caledonian Steam Packet Company, which was headquartered in Gourock. Subsequent reductions in the number of ferry passengers brought abandonment of parts of the station and a new more compact station building was completed in 2010. Now operated by ScotRail, Gourock Railway Station has three platforms, is staffed part-time and used by around 500,000 passengers per annum (2016). It is preceded by Fort Matilda Railway Station, a mile (1.5 km) to the east southeast.
