A terminal railway station in East Lothian, North Berwick (known in Gaelic as Bearaig a Tuath) is located a half-mile (0.8 km) west of the town centre. It represents the end of a branch which diverges from the East Coast Main Line at Drem, 4½ miles (7 km) to the south southwest. This station was opened in 1850 by the North British Railway and originally had two platforms, an engine shed, goods yard and associated sidings. In the late 1960s North Berwick was reduced to a single platform and the station buildings were demolished in 1985. The line was electrified in the 1990s and passenger numbers have grown steadily, with the unstaffed station used by more than 0.5 million passengers in 2014. It is now operated by ScotRail.
