The Oykel Viaduct carries the Far North Line of the Highland Railway across the Kyle of Sutherland between Culrain and Invershin, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Bonar Bridge. Also known as the Shin or Invershin Viaduct, this A-listed structure was built for the Sutherland Railway by engineers Joseph Mitchell (1803-83) and Murdoch Paterson (1826-98), and opened in 1868. It comprises a cast-iron lattice truss, some 70.1m / 230 feet in length, with two granite semicircular arches forming an approach span to the south and a further three arches to the north. In 2000, a footbridge was added to the northern side of the viaduct to improve access to Carbisdale Castle which at the time served as a Youth Hostel.
