Gigha Community Wind Farm is situated in the southwest of the island and began as three second-hand Vestas V27 turbines, known locally as the 'Dancing Ladies'. These were commissioned by the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust in December 2004, the first community-owned grid-connected wind farm in Scotland. Each turbine produces 225 kW of electrical power. In 2011, a new Enercon E33 turbine was added to the configuration. This was capable of generating an additional 330 kW of power, but was initially constrained to 225 kW because of restrictions placed by the 11 kV power lines that supply the island. A project was put in place to install a 1 MWh vanadium redox flow system, which would have acted as an enormous battery, storing excess energy and releasing it at times when the wind turbines were operating below capacity. However an upgrade to the power lines removed the generation constraint before this system was installed, and the wind farm can now operate at its full capacity of 1.005 MW.
