Old Rome Bridge

Lying to the south of Gatehead, the Old Rome Bridge carries the A759 road over the River Irvine, which here forms the boundary between South Ayrshire and East Ayrshire. Replacing an earlier bridge, it dates from 1870 and comprises a pair of wide segmental arches with a central triangular cutwater. It is constructed of rough red sandstone blocks with ashlar dressings.
