Burgar Hill Wind Farm

A wind farm in the district of Evie in the N of Orkney Mainland, Burgar Hill Wind Farm was established in 1983. Initially an experimental facility, one of the first turbines was a two-blade 3-megawatt (MW) aero-generator, then one of the largest in the world. This was demolished in 2000. A 1 MW unit was brought into service in 2000, while a 2.75 MW NEG Mikon unit, commissioned in 2002, was a prototype of a new generation of enormous offshore turbines. A further two Nordex N80 2.5 MW turbines were commissioned in 2007, bringing the output of the site to 8.75 MW. These are owned and operated by Innogy Renewables UK.
