Located at Hollows, 1¼ miles (2 km) north northwest of Canonbie in Dumfries and Galloway Council Area, the 16th-century Gilnockie Tower (also known as Hollows Tower) lies in the valley of the River Esk and comprises a four-storey oblong tower-house with a garret. It was the home of Johnnie Armstrong, a celebrated Borders hero who was hung by James V in 1530. It lay in ruins before being re-roofed in 1980 and was acquired by Clan Armstrong in 1992 - despite the Armstrongs never having been a clan! The tower now houses a Clan Armstrong Centre and Museum.
