Auchindoun Castle lies on the banks of the River Fiddich, 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Dufftown in Moray Council Area. A 15th century L-plan tower, it and its surrounding buildings now lie in ruins. Built by John Stuart, the Earl of Mar (c.1458-79), on his murder, the castle passed to Robert Cochrane, mason and favourite of King James III. However, in 1482, Cochrane was hanged from Lauder Bridge and the castle passed to the Ogilvie and Gordon clans before being destroyed by the MacIntosh clan in 1592 as a reprisal for the murder of the James Stuart, the Bonnie Earl of Moray (1568-91), by George Gordon, the 1st Marquis of Huntly (1562 - 1636), and Sir Patrick Gordon of Auchindoun.
It was rebuilt but was abandoned in the early 18th century. It is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
