Invergarry Castle

Locate on the shores of Loch Oich, a half-mile (1 km) east of the settlement of Invergarry in the Great Glen, Invergarry Castle was once the stronghold of the MacDonnell clan. Built as an L-plan tower house in the early 17th century, it comprised five storeys. The castle was burned by General Monk in 1654 but reclaimed by the clan and refortified. It changed hands during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and was visited twice by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the second rising of 1745-6. The Duke of Cumberland finally destroyed the castle in 1746 and it remains a ruin today.

A new mansion was built nearby, which is today the Glengarry Castle Hotel.
