Tomatin is the largest distillery in Scotland and, at an altitude of 313m (1028 feet), one of the highest. Lying a mile (1.5 km) northwest of the village of Tomatin, the present distillery was built in 1897, although whisky production in the area dates back to the 15th C.
Independently owned until it went into voluntary liquidation in 1984, the distillery was bought by a Japanese consortium in 1986. A unique feature of the distillery was its eel farm, which made use of waste hot water to rear eels on a commercial basis until the mid-1980s.
