Situated in splendid isolation overlooking the main A865 road, on the western slopes of Rueval on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, is the remarkable statue of Our Lady of the Isles. Erected in 1957, this B-listed statue depicts the Madonna and child and was sculpted by Hew Lorimer (1907-93), son of the noted architect Sir Robert Lorimer. It is regarded as one of his finest works. It is 9m (30 feet) in height and carved from granite. Lorimer gave the Madonna the familiar face of a typical island woman. The statue was commissioned by Father John Morrison, a noted local priest, paid for by the people of the island and consecrated by Bishop Kenneth Grant on the 15th August 1958.
