A somewhat austere pedestrianised square in the centre of Dundee, lying off the High Street. It was laid out in 1931 following the disgraceful decision to demolish William Adam's fine Town House (1731) which had previously stood on the site. The colonnade of this old building, known as the 'pillars' had been the meeting place for generations of Dundonians.
The Caird Hall, with its massive Classical colonnade, forms the southern aspect of the square and the City Chambers lies on its western side.
Such was the austerity of the Square that it was used in 1983 as a substitute for the Soviet Union during the filming of the Alan Bennett play An Englishman Abroad.
More recently improved by the addition of fountains and flower-beds, the square still forms the very heart of the city.
