Earthship, Craigencalt Farm Ecology Centre

Lying a half-mile (1 km) west of Kinghorn (Fife), on the shores of Kinghorn Loch, the Craigencalt Farm Ecology Centre aims to raise awareness of the environment and promote conservation and sustainability through a series of educational programmes. Established in 1998, the centre also works closely with the local community to care for Kinghorn Loch.

The site includes organic gardens, a sensory garden, herb garden, a bird hide overlooking the loch, a pond and marsh area and a community woodland, together with the first British 'earthship', or sustainable building, a variant of a design developed in the USA. Begun in 2002, the building includes old vehicle tyres, beer cans, bottles and sheep's wool amongst its building materials. The intention is to minimise the environmental impact in terms of materials used, but also by being self-sufficient in energy, making use of the sun, wind-power and hydro-electric power for heating and electricity.

Funding from the lottery, Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot), the local authority is used to support environmental talks and tours, school workshops, teacher training sessions and a programme of community education workshops. Visitors can also walk through a network of paths which form a spur to the Fife Coastal Path.
